While the central government recently declared India 100% electrified, two significant obstacles remain in India’s progress towards a genuinely universal electrification. The first is connectivity itself. The government’s definition of village electrification is that public places and at least 10% of homes are electrified, and the reality is that 17% of Indian households still lack a power connection. The second obstacle is the availability of power. As anyone with an electricity connection would agree, load shedding is standard practice across the country. In rural areas, most households suffer from a severe shortage of power.
